Legislation barring members of Congress from owning or trading stocks has earned the support of Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), who recently joined calls to bring the act to the House floor.

Fitzpatrick tweeted in January, sharing a letter sent by members of congress to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Kevin McCarthy. In this, he said two-thirds of Americans support banning members of Congress from trading stocks.

“I joined a letter with 27 bipartisan lawmakers calling on House leadership to bring stock trading ban legislation to the floor. Let’s get this done,” Fitzpatrick wrote in his tweet.

HR 1579, the Ban Conflicted Trading Act, sets stricter laws after trading rules outlined in the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act of 2012 had been broken numerous times in the past, according to Business Insider.

In the letter signed to Pelosi, Fitzpatrick called on the legislation stating it is an unfortunate necessity in light of recent misconduct and is supported by Americans across the political spectrum. With this, he said hundreds of STOCK Act violations have been reported since 2020 alone.

A January poll by The Hill outlined in Fitzpatrick’s letter states 76% of Americans, including 70% of Democrats and 78% of Republicans, say that members of Congress should not be allowed to trade stocks.

Of the supporters from Pennsylvania, all four are Democrats. Across the country, 37 representatives have cosponsored the bill. Of these, 34 are Democrat and three are Republican.
