Gov. Tom Wolf (D-PA) announced that the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) and Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) are receiving grants totaling $49 million for revamping various aspects of the airports.
According to a July 7 press release by Wolf, the Airport Terminals Program is a new federal grant program through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act.
“Airports are a critical part of Pennsylvania’s transportation network,” said Wolf. “Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, these airports will have the means to make crucial terminal improvements, improving the travel experience for all.”
There are 121 public aviation facilities in Pennsylvania including airports, heliports and seaplane bases.
PHL will be awarded $24 million for terminal improvements that include new restrooms, rooms for nursing mothers, gender neutral restrooms, adult assisted care restrooms and a pet relief area. There will also smart and touchless technology installed.
$20 million will be awarded to PIT for the Terminal Modernization Program. This includes building a 700,000 square-foot landside terminal for passenger security screen checkpoints as well as a checked baggage inspection system, baggage handling equipment, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection area and other public spaces.
For ABE, $5 million is being awarded to complete a terminal connector. This includes a new four lane TSA screening checkpoint and security screening equipment that is being put in place to address capacity limitations.
