Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (R-Lehigh) has criticized Gov. Josh Shapiro's state budget proposal for the 2024-25 fiscal year, calling it fiscally irresponsible. In a statement issued after attending a joint session of the General Assembly where the budget proposal was presented, Mackenzie expressed concerns about the $48.3 billion spending plan, which represents an 8.4% increase over the current fiscal year.
Mackenzie stated, "The governor had a few decent ideas, but his spending wish list is too long, and the overall amount of spending is fiscally irresponsible. After years of tough budget decisions, we have finally, successfully, gotten the state back onto stable financial footing. We should reject the governor's call for massive spending increases that rely on dipping into important reserve accounts because that is not sustainable in the long term."
Highlighting the importance of a balanced budget, Mackenzie emphasized that the state government cannot print money like the federal government and therefore needs to focus on priorities and deliver a no-tax increase budget that is balanced.
Mackenzie acknowledged that the governor's address is just the beginning of the annual state budget process. The House Appropriations Committee will conduct hearings to examine the details of the governor's plan and how state departments and agencies are spending their funding. The General Assembly and governor have until June 30 to finalize the budget.
It is clear that Rep. Ryan Mackenzie is concerned about the fiscal implications of Gov. Josh Shapiro's budget proposal, particularly the significant increase in spending. Mackenzie's statement reflects a belief in the importance of responsible financial management and the need to prioritize sustainable budget decisions. As the budget process unfolds, it will be interesting to see how Mackenzie and other lawmakers address these concerns and work towards a balanced budget that meets the needs of the state.
