Senator Jarrett Coleman announced that the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) has granted nearly $500,000 to the Bucks County Free Library. The funding is designated for a roof replacement project at the Quakertown branch, aimed at enhancing broadband internet access in the area.
Coleman emphasized the role of public libraries in providing internet access and supporting community members in various online activities. "Public libraries provide internet access to community residents and enable them to take advantage of the wide spectrum of learning and personal growth opportunities online," he stated. He further highlighted the importance of high-speed internet for job searches, health information access, and education initiatives. "Access to high-speed internet service can help individuals and families get ahead in our modern society."
The grant is part of a larger $45 million initiative funded through the federally backed Multi-Purpose Community Facilities Program. This program supports projects that improve broadband access for essential services like work, education, and health monitoring by utilizing community anchor institutions.
To ensure accountability, PBDA requires grantees to submit regular reports on project progress and compliance with federal standards. A final report will be due within three months after project completion, detailing outcomes and sustainability efforts. The last 10% of funding will be released only after this report undergoes thorough review.
This grant contributes to a broader statewide effort aimed at expanding high-speed internet access over several years.
