CITY OF ALLENTOWN: Water Safety Wednesday Campaign

Waterpalooza1

City of Allentown issued the following announcement on July 1.

The Department of Parks and Recreation announces their social media campaign “Water Safety Wednesdays” beginning on Wednesday July 8, 2020. The campaign will utilize educational resources from The American Red Cross to help you and your child learn about water safety while having fun in, on, and around the water.

Water Safety Wednesdays will feature short, engaging and age-appropriate episodes from The American Red Cross WHALE Tales, where “Longfellow” the friendly water safety whale, reminds children grades K-6 or beginner swimmers: “Do Your Part – Be Water Smart!” Find more activities for kids and additional resources for parents and guardians at www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies/types-of-emergencies/water-safety.html.

Additionally, the City of Allentown would like to encourage all community members to take “The Pool Safety Pledge” – a quick and easy way for the whole family to commit to being safe in, on and around water this summer. The pledge, along with free resources for kids and adults, can be found online at www.poolsafely.gov/pledge.

According to Parks & Recreation Director Karen El-Chaar, “the city and the American Red Cross want to help parents, guardians and children understand and share important water safety skills together. While you and your child may not be able to participate in formal swim lessons right now, you can still learn how to be safer around backyard pools, ponds, and other natural bodies of water where swimming is approved. We hope you and your family enjoy a safe, healthy and happy summer!”

Thinking about installing a pool or inflating a pool in your Allentown backyard? Be sure to comply with Allentown rules and regulations - information can be found at www.allentownpa.gov/Portals/0/files/Planning_Zoning/SwimPoolReqsJuly2014.pdf.

For additional information and resources, residents and visitors are encouraged to contact the Parks & Recreation office at 610-437-7757 and/or follow our department on social media via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @AllentownParksandRec.
