Lehigh Carbon Community College issued the following announcement on Aug. 26.

The community will have the opportunity to gather and remember the tragedy of 9/11 at the 20th anniversary ceremony “Never Forget: A September 11 Remembrance Event - Stories of Resiliency, Empathy, and Strength” on Friday, Sept. 10. The event will begin at 8:15 a.m. in the Community Services Center on Lehigh Carbon Community College’s Schnecksville campus. It is sponsored by LCCC and the Veterans and Military Council of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The event is open to the public. Tickets are $25 for chamber members or members of the community and free to veterans, active military, first responders and students. Registration, networking and breakfast begin at 8:15 a.m. and the hour-long program commences at 9 a.m.

The event will feature three inspirational speakers, each with their personal and intimate stories of how Sept. 11 impacted their lives forever and what they are doing to positively influence the lives of others.

Scheduled speakers include:

Col. Mary Lowe Mayhugh, U.S. Army, Retired, president of the John P. Mayhugh Foundation, will speak from the perspective of a mental health advocate and survivor. Mayhugh has worked in Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan and participated in domestic operations including Y2K, 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. Her work transformed military readiness programs and shaped strategies that created collaborative partnerships between the Department of Defense, government agencies and the private sector, to improve access to resources for military service members and their families.

Payton Lynch, author of Rise from the Ashes: Stories of Trauma, Resilience, and Growth from the Children of 9/11, and motivational speaker, together with her husband, Jonathon Lynch, surviving child of 9/11, share his and other 9/11 children’s stories of how they found triumph from tragedy.
