Basketball Drops Season Opener at Bryn Mawr

Cedar Crest College Athletics issued the following announcement on Nov. 12.

The Cedar Crest College basketball team dropped its season opener at Bryn Mawr College, 54-39, on Wednesday night at the Class of 1958 Gymnasium.

Freshman Jessica Smith (Turlock, Calif.) led all scorers with 26 points to fuel the Owls (0-1 overall). She shot 10-for-19 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free throw line while also adding eight rebounds and two steals. Junior Sydney Collins (Glen Gardner, N.J.) finished with 11 points, eight boards, two assists, and two steals.

Junior Ashley Wilson (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) paced the Falcons (0-1 overall) with 11 points on 2-for-12 shooting and 6-for-8 from the charity stripe. Classmate Megan Peifer (Weatherly, Pa./Weatherly) also finished in double figures with 10 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists, three steals, and a block.

Cedar Crest led by as many as three points in the first half, but Bryn Mawr would grab the lead for good with 3:30 remaining in the opening quarter. The Owls led 19-15 at the end of the first and held a 29-26 advantage at the intermission. Smith led all scorers with 13 points at the break.

Bryn Mawr took control in the second half behind a 6-0 run that left it with a 35-26 lead with 5:40 remaining in the third stanza. The Falcons answered back with a 7-0 run to close the deficit to two (35-33). The Owls came back and went on a 9-0 spurt in the final 3:07 to stretch the lead to 11 at the end of three quarters (44-33). Bryn Mawr never trailed again and pumped the lead to as many as 16 points with 1:42 to go.

Junior Kelly Reid (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finished with nine points, three boards, three assists, and two steals. Freshman Francess Suah (Philadelphia, Pa./Constitution ) pulled in a team-high 10 rebounds and registered a game-high five steals.

The Owls held a 50-32 edge on the glass. Bryn Mawr shot 39 percent from the floor and held Cedar Crest to a 26-percent clip.

Cedar Crest will next host Penn. State-Berks on Friday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m.
