Cedar Crest College Athletics issued the following announcement on May 8.
The Cedar Crest College track & field program finished third at the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship, which was hosted by Alfred State College.
Penn State Behrend won the conference title with a total of 246 points. Alfred State followed in second with 197 points. The Falcons collected 90 points while Gallaudet registered 22 points for a fourth-place finish. Keystone and Notre Dame of Maryland University finished tied for fifth with 10 points each.
"This was a really strong conclusion to the season for the team," said Head Coach Alec Duncan. "The team had a lot of strong performances across all events and took the podium in almost every event we were represented in."
Freshman Tiffany Kuras (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) won the javelin event, throwing for a mark of 34.21 meters, 11 meters further than the second-place finisher. Classmate Rebecca Verdi (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill ) registered a personal best in the javelin with a fourth-place finish with a mark of 22.48 meters.
Freshman Abril Riley (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman ) posted two top-ten finishes on Sunday, including a pair of personal records. She placed sixth in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finishing line in 14.12 seconds. Riley also recorded a personal record in the long jump with a distance of 4.18 meters, which put her ninth.
"Abril did great to get into the 100-meter finals," commented Duncan. "She ran a great race to take sixth in the finals."
Five other Falcons registered top-five finishes on Saturday. Senior Brittney Dunleavy (Auburn, Pa./Blue Mountain) took second in the 100-meter hurdles with a program record and personal best time of 17.28 seconds. She also finished second in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 1:18.78.
"Brittney ran great races in the hurdles events and did well to take second in both of those events," remarked Duncan.
Junior Emily Kern (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) posted top-five finishes in the 400-meter dash along with the 800-meter run. She placed fifth (1:08.76) and fourth (2:41.72), respectively. Classmate Kiley
Marone joined Kern in the top five of the 400-meter event, recording a time of 1:07.32.
"Kiley and Emily put in a lot of really strong performances and improved on their own school records throughout the weekend," continued Duncan.
Transitioning back to the field events, junior Kelsee Schouppe (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) and Kuras took fourth and fifth, respectively in the shot put with marks of 10.00 meters and 9.83 meters.
"Kelsee and Tiffany both did great for us in the throws, at they have all season," said Duncan. "All our throwers were really consistent this weekend and competed well throughout the weekend."
Cedar Crest will now transition into regional competition and will return to action at the AARTFC Outdoor Track & Field Championship hosted by Moravian University, which is set to begin Wednesday, May 18.
