Senator Jarrett Coleman has taken a stand against the recent trend of hoax threats at local schools by voting for a bill approved by the state Senate. The legislation aims to enhance criminal penalties for those convicted of making false threats against schools and higher education institutions.

"The sick people who submit these false threats should face significant repercussions and have to pay – figuratively and literally – for their crime," said Senator Coleman. "Students and teachers should be able to focus their attention on learning without being distracted by threats of violence."

The bill, known as Senate Bill 975, would classify making a false report of a terrorist threat to a school, college, university or other higher education institution as a third-degree felony. Those convicted could face imprisonment of up to seven years and a fine of up to $15,000. Additionally, courts would have the authority to compel the criminal to pay for the costs associated with the false terrorist threat report, including salaries and wages for emergency responders and school staff.

"Anonymous tiplines have been weaponized against our school districts," Coleman emphasized. "Given the prevalence and frequency of hoax threats our educational institutions are receiving, it’s time to ensure that the perpetrators of these crimes face serious consequences for their actions."

The recent closures and lockdowns in local schools due to hoax threats have highlighted the urgency of addressing this issue. The Saucon Valley School District, Allentown schools, Lehigh Career & Technical Institute, and Parkland School District have all been affected by false threats in recent years.
