Senator Jarrett Coleman and Representative Mike Schlossberg have announced a $150,000 grant awarded to South Whitehall Township. The funding comes from the Pennsylvania Local Share Account program and will be used to conduct a road safety audit on Hamilton Boulevard in Lehigh County.
Hamilton Boulevard is an important route for both residents and businesses in South Whitehall Township. The section between I-78 and Cedar Crest Boulevard has been highlighted as a high crash corridor in the Lehigh Valley Traffic Safety Plan, with 182 crashes recorded between 2015 and 2022. The upcoming audit aims to address these safety concerns by recommending specific countermeasures.
The grant is part of the broader distribution of gaming revenues facilitated by the Commonwealth Financing Authority under the PA Race Horse Development and Gaming Act (Act 2004-71). These funds are allocated to support projects serving public interests within Pennsylvania.
"Drivers in our community know that there are a lot of traffic challenges on Hamilton Boulevard," said Senator Coleman. "The road safety audit will help us to identify solutions to improve the safety and accessibility of this vital traffic corridor in the Lehigh Valley."
Representative Schlossberg emphasized the significance of addressing safety issues on Hamilton Boulevard, stating, "There are no doubt roads across the United States face a safety crisis. Hamilton Boulevard is no exception." He added that collaboration with township leaders has been ongoing to secure resources for enhancing road safety.
