The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) has announced a grant aimed at enhancing digital connectivity in Lehigh County. According to Senator Jarrett Coleman, the Parkland Community Library in Allentown will benefit from this initiative by receiving 20 laptops. These devices are intended to improve broadband internet access and support digital literacy and skills training.
Senator Coleman emphasized the importance of internet access, stating, “Having slow or no internet is an undeniable hindrance for people of all ages, whether they’re going to school or running a business that benefits the community.” He added that with the new devices, the library could help individuals achieve their goals more effectively.
The funding comes from the Federal American Rescue Plan Act Digital Connectivity Technology Program. This program required applicants such as local governments, libraries, schools, municipalities, workforce training organizations, and not-for-profit organizations to demonstrate how affordability issues affected broadband adoption. The competitive process distributed part of a $20 million fund.
Established with backing from Senate Republicans, PBDA operates as an independent agency within the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Its responsibilities include developing a statewide broadband plan and allocating federal and state funds for expanding broadband services in unserved and underserved regions across Pennsylvania.
