State Senator Jarrett Coleman | Pennsylvania
Senator Jarrett Coleman of Pennsylvania has expressed his opposition to Governor Josh Shapiro's proposed budget, which would increase state spending by $3.6 billion, marking a 7.5% rise over the current year's budget. In a statement, Coleman highlighted warnings from Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity and the state's Independent Fiscal Office about potential financial repercussions.
Coleman stated, "Warnings from Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity and the state’s Independent Fiscal Office have become increasingly dire regarding serious financial consequences the state and its taxpayers may face." He added that following Shapiro's plan could result in a $27.3 billion deficit within five years.
The senator criticized Shapiro's proposal as unaffordable without significant tax hikes, saying, "Shapiro’s grand spending plan simply isn’t something we can afford without high tax increases – which no one wants." Coleman emphasized his commitment to finding efficiencies and cost reductions while ensuring funding for essential government services like public safety and education.
As part of his role on the Senate Appropriations Committee, Coleman will participate in upcoming budget hearings where state agencies will present their financial needs. He remarked, "I look forward to making diligent assessments about all spending proposals and prudent decisions about what taxpayers can afford."
The senator aims to shift from what he described as Governor Shapiro’s “fantasy budget” to one that is more fiscally responsible for taxpayers.
